Before daylight, I set out on foot from Liberty Baptist Church toward Graveyard Island Trail. As I approached the trail, the calls of crows broke the early morning silence. Looking up, I discovered two dark figures perched high in a dead tree, overlooking the path ahead. Against the gray Alaskan sky, they seemed to be standing guard over the quiet wilderness, a fitting welcome to the beginning of my morning walk.
